At the New York launch event for The Creative Entrepreneur, hosted by the author, Carolyn Dailey and Nile Rodgers—one of the ten creative icons sharing their entrepreneurial journey in the book—the room was filled with a creative crowd and incredible stories.
Music legend Nile Rodgers recounted the unforgettable night that led to the creation of Diana Ross’s iconic song “I’m Coming Out.”
Rodgers shared that during a night out in New York City, he visited a club where he encountered several drag queens dressed as Diana Ross. This experience sparked the idea for the song. As he recalled: “I go to the bathroom, and on both sides of me — seven to ten deep on either side — are all Diana Rosses,” he recalled.“I get overly excited… I call my partner, and tell him to write this down: ‘I’m coming out,’” he continued.
This anecdote, among others, highlights the importance of being attuned to one’s surroundings and experiences, turning them into opportunities for innovation and expression. It’s a testament to how everyday moments can ignite groundbreaking ideas when approached with an entrepreneurial mindset.
