By Carolyn Dailey, Founder of Creative Entrepreneurs
Quiz: What do Charlotte Tilbury Beauty, Roksanda, the V&A’s new wing, Bella Freud, Frieze, indie film streamer MUBI, IMDb, digital giant AKQA and cult game franchise Monument Valley all have in common?
They’re all based on awesome businesses, built by their visionary founders: Charlotte Tilbury, Roksanda Ilincic, Amanda Levete, Bella Freud, Matthew Slotover, Efe Cakarel, Col Needham, Ajaz Ahmed and Mills Miller.
Each of them is a mega role model for aspiring creative entrepreneurs, so I’ve interviewed them all, each graciously giving their time and excited to speak to our cherished community about building a creative business, advice they all said they wish they’d had when starting out. And which remains far too sparse in the creative world.
To welcome our community to entrepreneurship in their language, we did all of these interviews in iconic creative spaces, like the Serpentine and Whitechapel Galleries, the Design Museum, Second Home and the private screening room of Working Title Films (thank you, Eric).
Now, spurred on by these founders’ inspiration and support, we are taking our next conversations to the digital world by starting our brand new podcast “Creative Entrepreneurs Conversations.”
And we’ll not only be talking to creative founders – we’re opening up the conversation to all the key players around them, who are essential to their success and not talked about enough – we call them “the empowerers” – investors, mentors, educators, policymakers and cultural leaders.
The wild success of creative businesses (vs the starving artist stereotype) is the great untold story. We want to tell it now, to empower and educate others.
Our first Creative Entrepreneurs Conversations podcast episode drops soon. Wonder who’s my first guest? Watch this space and see you there!
