On the evening of Tuesday 6th February 2018, Creative Entrepreneurs were delighted to host the ninth instalment of its flagship in-conversation series The Founder Files. For the first event of 2018, we were honoured to have the iconic fashion designer Bella Freud, live in conversation with our own founder, Carolyn Dailey, at the gorgeous new work space and cultural hub from Second Home in Holland Park.
After drinks and mingling, the live audience were gripped by Bella's incredible and quite unique entrepreneurial story and hear her advice for those starting their own creative businesses including the need to protect your brand name through trade marks across the globe to prevent 'squatting', the importance of finding investors who understand your brand and not to be ashamed or nervous about wanting to make money as a creative entrepreneur.
Bella's story was full of inspirational anecdotes from her creative collaborations with the like of John Malkovich, to using fashion as a tool for for making political statements. It was was also incredibly valuble and insightful for hear Bella's honesty when describing the pressures of starting her business and her struggle to define her brand in the early years.

Fashion designer Bella Freud was born in London and studied in Rome. She launched her eponymous fashion label in 1990 and is renowned for her signature jumpers Je t’aime Jane, Ginsberg is God and 1970. Fans of Bella Freud include Alexa Chung, Laura Bailey, Kate Moss and Alison Mosshart.
Bella works expansively across the creative sectors. She has produced several films including collaborations with John Malkovich, Bafta-winning director Martina Amati, Laura Bailey and Lara Stone. She also created a limited edition magazine ‘Memo’ with rock icon Anita Pallenberg.
Bella has also worked with major brands including Jaeger, Biba and Miss Selfridge, Barbour, Fred Perry and Cutler & Gross.
She has pioneered with her own brand, expanding into perfume, scented candles and menswear. She opened her first stand alone store in 2015 in Chiltern Street, London.
