Chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced an extension to the eligibility date of the Job Retention Scheme, from 28th February to 19th March – the day before the scheme was launched.
An estimated over 200,000 employees should now be eligible to receive support from the government, following considerable pressure from workers around the country. However, for employers who are considering re-hiring former employees in order to furlough them, the deadline remains 28th February.
Under the scheme, employers can claim a grant covering 80% of the wages for a furloughed employee, subject to a cap of £2,500 a month. Employers can claim for furloughed employees that were employed and on their PAYE payroll on or before 19 March 2020. This means that the employee must have been notified to HMRC through an RTI submission notifying payment in respect of that employee on or before 19 March 2020.
