    Martin Roth, who has died of cancer aged 62, became the first foreign-born director of the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2011, but last September he announced his departure a year earlier than expected after expressing concern at the Brexit vote.

    Roth was already one of Germany’s most successful cultural figures when he succeeded Mark Jones in the South Kensington hot seat, having served as director general of Dresden’s State Art Collections, an arts complex which comprises 12 museums with nine different directors. Despite budget cuts and austerity, his tenure at the V & A was marked by a highly successful period of creativity and expansion which drew record numbers of visitors and was recognised last year when the museum was named 2016 Art Fund Museum of the Year.
